PUBLISHERS' CLARIFICATION

Mr. Washington' habit has for several years been to deliver a practical, simple address to the scholars of tuskegee Institute on Sunday evening. These addresses have had much to try and do with the build up of the character of his race, for they're terribly forceful explanations of character building. The speaker has place into them his whole ethical earnestness, his broad common sense and, in many places, his eloquence. several of Mr. Washington' friends have aforementioned that a number of these addresses are the simplest of his utterances.

they have an extra interest as a result of they show him at his work and provides an indoor read of the school.

This volume is formed of alternatives from these addresses chosen by Mr. Washington himself.

PREFACE

variety of years ago, once the Tuskegee traditional and Industrial Institute was quite small, with solely a number of dozen students and 2 or 3 teachers, i started the apply of giving what were known as Sunday Evening Talks to the scholars and teachers. These addresses were always delivered during a colloquial tone and far within the same manner that i'd speak to my very own children around my fireside. because the establishment step by step grew from year to year, friends steered that these addresses got to be preserved, and for that reason throughout the past few years they need been stenographically reported. For the aim of this book they have been somewhat revised; and that i am greatly indebted to my secretary, Mr. Emmett J. Scott, and to Mr. max bennett Thrasher, for aiding me within the revision and in putting them into correct form for publication; and to Mr. T. Thomas Fortune for suggesting that these addresses be printed in book form.

In these addresses I even have tried from week to week to talk straight to the hearts of our students and lecturers and guests regarding the issues and queries that confront them within their standard of living here in the South. the foremost encouraging factor in reference to the creating of those addresses has been the shut attention which the scholars and teachers and visitors have always paid, and therefore the hearty approach within which they need spoken to me of the assistance that they have received from them.

throughout the past four years these addresses are printed in the school paper every week. This paper, The Tuskegee Student, features a wide circulation among our graduates et al within the South, so in reproval our students on Sunday evening I even have felt during a degree that i used to be talking to an outsized proportion of the colored folks in the South. If there's something in these addresses which is able to be of interest or service to a still wider audience, I shall feel I have been over repaid for any effort that I have place forth in reference to them.

TWO SIDES OF LIFE

There are quite an range of divisions into that life will be divided, but for the needs of this evening i'm getting to speak of two; the brilliant aspect of life and therefore the dark side.

In thought, in talk, in action, i believe you'll notice that you just will separate life into these two divisions—the dark side and the bright side, the discouraging side and the encouraging side. you'll find, too, that there are two categories of people, even as there are two divisions of the subject. there's one category that's schooling itself, and perpetually coaching itself, to appear upon the dark aspect of life; and there's another class, created of folks that are, consciously or unconsciously, constantly training themselves to look upon the brilliant side of life.

currently it's not wise to go too far in either direction. The one who faculties himself to examine the dark side of life is probably going to create a mistake, and therefore the person who schools himself to look solely upon the bright side of life, forgetting all else, is also apt to make a mistake.
